Wild West roadtrip recap!

Out on the wide open road!

(fig. 1)

This is my friend Courtnay and I about halfway through Montana... and about halfway through our "Wild West" road trip.

Court, a traveling nurse who decided to leave the East Cost via car to head back to the Pacific Northwest for a month (before taking up her next assignment in, oh, i don't know, wherever the hell she wants...) was looking for a little company on her excursion, so naturally, I hopped on the first plane to Sioux Falls South Dakota to meet her half way.

Before you say "Sioux Falls?!? Why would you ever fly there?!!??" (Just like a handful of people during my layover in Minneapolis horrifyingly asked) it was simply a natural stopping point for me to meet up with Courtnay, and we were there only long enough to get gas and a crappy tasting 20 oz black coffee.

After that, we starting flying through the vast countryside of South Dakota, stopping for scenic photo ops at such geographical wonders as a) the Badlands and b) Mount Rushmore.

A) the Badlands
Jagged striped rockage as far as the eye can see! (Which is far in South Dakota.)

Token "cute flower" shot. Made all the rattlers seem much less scary.

Love the sharp cuts through the crisp blue sky (quick disclaimer- all these shots are naked.)

Rainbow rocks!

Court and I loved these rocks so much we had to stick our heads out the sunroof and take a picture to capture our true excitement! (Really not being sarcastic here...)

Seriously, we were stoked about our drive through these immensely beautiful rock formations.
Not into beautiful rock formations? Then don't go to South Dakota.

B) Mount Rushmore
Another beautiful, though not entirely natural, rock formation.

Those are four of our "founding" fathers: Washington, Jefferson (?), Roosevelt (Google which one if you need to) and Lincoln.

In all honestly, it was a little underwhelming. We stayed there all of 15 minutes before making a pit stop at Crazy Horse monument (I'll return in 50 years when there's more than a forehead and nose sticking out of the side of  huge-assed rock) and hurrying to what we had hoped would be the "cracking" city of Sturgis.

For those of you who don't know, Sturgis is a destination biker-city that hosts thousands of leather-clad Harley enthusiasts every year for one of the biggest HOG events in North America.
Sounds pretty cool right?
That's what we thought, and why we chose to stay there instead of our other option of Rapid City.
We got into town about 9:30 p.m. and had to race to even get a bite to eat before everything shut down.
Moral of the story?
Sturgis is a snoozer any time the rally isn't going on.

NEXT.

Deadwood.

We didn't realize that this historic gem of a gambling oasis was just a stone's throw away from our Super 8 lodge in Sturgis when we arrived (otherwise, we definitely would have stayed here.) But we made a pit stop in the morning to tour the few blocks of the city which feels like it hasn't changed a bit since the good old cowboy heyday of the Western expansion - other than the hum of hundreds of electrically powered slot machines.

We had drinks, played a few rounds on the Buffalo machine, got some coffee, and hit the road once again.

 (fig. 2)

After leaving South Dakota, we began to weave in and out of Montana and Wyoming before taking a jaunt into Yellowstone.
Both countrysides were scenic and serene. There's not much there in the way of civilization, but the untouched landscapes of these states are (for lack of a better word) awe-inspiring.

At one point during the drive, we decided to take advantage of the nothingness of our surroundings and set up some self-timer pix along the expanse of long open road (see fig. 1 and 2 above, as well as the one of us rioght hurr in front of the green fence.)

After hours of driving, we finally made it into the gates of Yellowstone, via the freaking terrifying mountain pass called "Beartooth Loop."

Don't get me wrong, the drive was absolutely gorgeous, but there's just something damn unsettling about getting higher and higher onto a mountain along a very narrow and very windy ridge with little more than a foot-tall "guardrail,"  with a driver who is sweating profusely through her extremely vocal anxiety attack.

Me (who kept offering to drive but was secretly SO GLAD she never took me up on my offer) tried to remain calm, and take her mind off her fear by asking her things like "So... what's your favorite food?"
Her response "Um.. well... I don't know. I like a lot of things.'
Me: "Well what's you're favorite? Just pick one... humor me."
Her (suddenly sounding much more tense): "OK.. like pick one? Like my favorite food I would eat for my last meal? LIKE IF I WERE GOING TO DIE?!"

....

Needless to say, that portion of the drive wasn't exactly relaxing. And our suffering  probably lasted much longer than the average visitors' because we stayed a steady 25 mph on the 70 mph winding road.
But, like I said before, it was a beautiful site to see and it led us directly into what I had been hoping to see the entire trip:
An ass load of wild bison!

As you can see, this portion of our trip took the stress level down immensely.
(NOT!)

Before we got to Yellowstone, I was starting to get nervous that we wouldn't be driving through the "right part" of the park to "really get to see" the wildlife, particularly the bison.
Apparently, I was wrong!
These big hairy beings literally take over portions of roads in the park-  blocking traffic, rolling in brush, kicking up dirt, grunting, staring menacingly into your car...
you know, all the normal stuff you would expect from thousand pound wild  animals with a tendency to gore unsupervised travelers.

So... I'm going to pull the "gorgeous" card again.
And the "we made it out alive" card, is always a plus, too.

We wearily made it into Bozeman that night, about four hours past schedule due to all the unforeseen, slowing-down circumstances, and slept hard.
We woke the next morning and made our way to Coeur D'Alane, Idaho early enough to finally enjoy some fun in the sun!

YE-HAW!
Us on the beach with our matching hats (in case you didn't notice them earlier.)

View of the lake from our lovely room, thanks to the sweetest lady ever - Doris "Grams" Weaver, who certainly helped show us girls a good time.
Thanks, Doris!

And that pretty much wraps up our Wild West roadtrip -
now mosey on, lil' doggies!

Windmill!

Here's a couple shots of a windmill at Taylor's mom's house, where we had Julian's THIRD birthday party this year.
Kat asked me to snap a few shots (because she is in love with old windmills) so I did, and since Grace is hosting a "bokeh" photo challenge this week, I'm linking up!

Oh yea, and here's the birthday boy (with Mom and Dad) working hard to blow out candle 2 of 3.
Happy birthday, lover boy!

Naked Sunday!

After a brief, one-week hiatus from posting naked photos to the blogosphere, I'm back with a few to share from last night's incredible Swampy Draws performance at the world-famous Swiss Pub!

 Friends, family, fans.

The man, the myth, the legend: Swampy Draws himself!

 The view from the deck.

Shake it!

Shake it like the devil!

Naked on a Boat!

This weekend was the first true taste of summer for us PNW-ers, so Sean and I made it our mission to get out on a boat.
And with just a little convincing, Papa Rob graciously let us ride out to Delano Bay with him, which is an amazing shallow/warm/calm water spot on the other side of Penrose Point.
I can't believe I had never been there before.
Needless to say, we had a blast! It was sooo nice to finally get our summer on.

Thanks, Grace!

So I'm generally a pretty happy, easygoing person.
Don't get me wrong,  I get straight heated when the time is right, but I usually don't just walk around thinking that the world sucks.

But for whatever reason, today I was totally not in a happy mood.
I woke up normal, and moderately happy.
Then work happend.
Rain in July.
Got about three disappointing text messages.
And voila! I'm grumpy.
And I really don't like being grumpy.
Being grumpy actually makes me more grumpy because I fixate on how annoyed I am that I'm grumpy, which obviously fuels the fire.
It's a pretty vicious cycle, really.
So, in order to distract myself, I decided to read my sister's blog , which didn't actually help matters because he content of her latest post is midly depressing and, she has the flu.
BUMMER.

So naturally, I moved on to my neice Grace's blog, where she had recently shared a few simple things that make her smile.
Not only does Grace alone always make me smile, but so does thinking about the little things that make her smile.

So, in an attempt to be less bitchy and more smiley, I'm taking a cue from the noble 12-year-old in my life and going to focus on the many, many things that make me happy, instead of the handful of things that don't.

Here goes!
(And these are in no particular order)

First off, Grace

because pretty much everything that she posts makes me smile in some way- whether it be her hilarious, witty or observant rambings, or her always sunny, bright and cheery photos (usually of people that I know and love, which obvi adds to the smile-factor.)
P.S. isn't she freakin' gorg?!

2nd:
Yesterday I picked up my oldest friend Courtnay from the airport.
I hadn't seen her since April, and she hadn't set foot on the West Coast since January.
Not only am I super excited to be able to hang with her for the next few days (which includes a whitewater rafting trip in Wenatchee.... whaattt?), the pick-up itself was hilarious and definitely makes me smile!
(Brief recap: we told Court that Taylor had to work so she wouldn't be able to come with me to pick her up. But we lied. Taylor hid in my trunk, and when Court opened the hatch door it was hilarious!)

THREE

My boyfriend's latest Facebook post. (Cheesy, I know.)
But without him even knowing my day wasn't exactly up to par, he sent me a Facebook note saying "Hope yer days goin well shoooga!"
(please ignore the grammatical errors. he sent it from his phone.)
And he's not exactly the Facebook-wall-posting type.
Simply stated, made me smile.
(Among the many other sweet and hilarious things he entertains me with on the daily.)

four

Literally all I have to do is think about his wacky ass, and I'm usually beaming from ear-to-ear, if not completely in stiches.
Much love.

 Five:

My family, in general.
Not only do I have an intense love for all of my crazy relatives, it makes me smile that I get to see most of them on a pretty regular basis.
From my awesome sister, whom I don't know what  I would do without;
to my sweet and unknowlingly hilarious mom; my goofy, but loving, brother; my even goofier, and equally as loving dad; three impressively adorable/handsome/funny/smart/talented nephews; myriads of unique and enviably talented cousins, aunts and uncles; three out of four grandparents, not to mention all the non-blood-related family members that I hold extremely close - you name it, I got it!
And I know a lot of people don't.
Which means I should buck up and smile about it, dammit!

Six:

Nice weather.
Even though we are not experiencing that at the exact moment (see fig. 1 below) when it does pop up (like fig. 1 says it might tomorrow) I know I'll be smiling about it then...

fig. 1

7!
The peanut butter pretzels and chocolate chips I packed for a snack, which I will soon be eating.
AND the hot, homemade soup I am eating currently (I know it's July, but remember, it's RAINING? soup makes sense. and makes smiles).

eight:

the sweet new paint job I gave my bike this weekend

(before)

(after)

nine:

This joke (which I have unofficially dubbed as my 'favorite joke of all time')
What's brown and rhymes with snoop?

scroll to the bottom of this post for the punchline.

10.

It's Thursday, which only means one thing: tomorrow is Friday!
Which mean's I can bring out the Rebecca Black.
Saturday comes after that, and then... it's Sunday... and I got no complaints on weekends, people.

So bring it on, pissy mood!
My "things that make me smile list" will totally defeat your sorry ass!

and here's the punchline to number nine:

Doctor Dre, motha effas!

(I know you all wanted to say poop. Don't lie.)

Gone Campin'

My shadow in the plush grass at Palouse Falls State Park.

Palouse Falls, itself.

More gorgeous Eastern Washington Scenery at the park.

The Large Water mass (aka 'lake') at Potholes State Park, where we camped the second night. (About 30 miles outside of Moses Lake).

Lakeside Moustaches

Sean was in charge of bringing "fun stuff to do."
Squirt guns, kites and lake floaties...?
SUCCESS!

Of course, beer and campfires (the true essence of camping) are also pretty fun...

Vegan grilled cheese w/tomato on hearty wheat bread with a hearty wheat beer = camping breakfast of champions!

Night sky at Potholes...

More scenery on the drive home....

landscape on long, weird, bridge through the middle of nowhere out of Potholes...

 "Scenic Viewpoint" outside of Vantage.

The End!
